All our Carlton based local lawyers have trained with the firm and service clients across Melbourne & Victoria. The two partners have a combined work experience of nearly half a century between them.
Our History - Carlton Lawyers
Whilst Judicate Lawyers may be newly established, the firm has its origins in the City of Melbourne in the 1970s when Founding Principal, Michael Henry Pickering, was commencing his legal training. Michael and his fellow Principal, Michael Tourkakes, have only ever worked for two other law firms before establishing Judicate Lawyers in October 2016.
The founding of Judicate Lawyers was challenging. The two Michaels were both previously employed by a law firm of which the sole owner unexpectedly passed away in late September 2016 when the two Michaels were coincidentally both in Europe visiting relatives on annual leave.
Given the unexpected passing of the sole owner, the Sydney and Melbourne branches of the law firm in which both Michaels were then employed immediately ceased to operate. Sadly, all lawyers, paralegals and assistants were left with no job.
The staff in the Sydney branch went their separate ways in late September 2016. The City of Melbourne staff, however, had all worked together for a decade. They had established a deserved reputation in the Melbourne legal market and had a loyal client following. The two Michaels decided upon their return to Melbourne in early October 2016 to establish an entirely new legal practice called Judicate Lawyers, which is derivatively based on the verb “adjudicate” or the resolution of disputed matters.
Both Michaels recognized that forming Judicate Lawyers would require hard work in not only setting up the business management of the practice but also ensuring that client matters were not neglected. Both Michaels decided to re-employ all Melbourne staff at Judicate Lawyers and thereby provide them with continuing security. The Melbourne staff had worked together for many years and in some cases for decades. The birth of Judicate Lawyers reassured the legal staff who were otherwise facing financial hardship and the stress of locating new jobs.
Besides the usual hurdles of setting up a new legal practice such as a regulatory recognition, applying for principals’ certificates, obtaining authority to operate a trust account, setting up bank accounts, and obtaining office, workers’ compensation and professional indemnity insurance, Judicate Lawyers faced the additional problem that the previous employer had not paid rent for some months on the Melbourne office accommodation. An entirely new office location with phone and internet connection had to be found in little over a week or we faced eviction!
During the course of its short existence, Judicate Lawyers has seen an increase in referral work received from loyal clients. As a result of the reputation of both Michaels in their practice areas of Insolvency, Corporate, Commercial, Wills and Estates and Property Law, which has driven a rapid growth in workflow, Judicate Lawyers has now commenced advertising for new Legal Graduate Trainees.
Our phoenix – like transition and our determination to re-hire the entire Melbourne staff evidences the placement of staff recognition and job satisfaction at the forefront of our new practice. Judicate Lawyers cares about, values and respects its people because we recognise that such a law firm serves its clients best.
